Project Name: European Species Initiative
Year of Project Start: 2021
Status: Active
Type: Conservation of European Biodiversity
Europe is rich in many species, but many of them face serious threats such as habitat loss, climate change, and human activities. Zoos and aquariums have a unique opportunity to play a key role in biodiversity conservation. They are important centers for nature and environmental protection, education, and scientific research, and can connect the public with concrete conservation actions, raising awareness of the importance of protecting endangered species.
Zoos and aquariums work to preserve Europe’s rich natural heritage, helping not only wild animals but also ecosystems, economies, and local communities. The conservation of European species is crucial because many of these species are essential to our identity and cultural heritage, and each one plays a key role in maintaining ecological balance.
Zagreb Zoo has launched the European Species Initiative, dedicated to promoting and enhancing the conservation of European species within zoos and aquariums. This initiative includes encouraging collaboration among European zoos, conservation organizations, and local communities, as well as providing the necessary resources and support for the protection of European species.
As part of the initiative, a platform for exchanging ideas and best practices has been established, and collaboration among stakeholders allows zoos and aquariums to become active participants in wildlife conservation.
This collaboration enables the use of collective knowledge and resources, thereby increasing the effectiveness of our conservation efforts. The initiative also serves as a hub for exchanging innovative ideas, successful conservation strategies, and scientific research. By creating a space for dialogue and knowledge exchange, we facilitate continuous learning and adaptation, driving effective efforts for the well-being of European species and their habitats.
At the heart of the European Species Initiative lies a clear idea: to empower zoos and aquariums across Europe to take a leading role in the protection of European species. These institutions are key players in biodiversity conservation and have the potential to make significant contributions to the preservation of European wildlife through carefully designed conservation projects.
Our mission is to provide zoos and aquariums with the necessary tools, knowledge, and support to protect native European species. By offering practical resources and fostering collaboration, we aim to increase the capacity of these institutions to develop and implement specific conservation programs that have lasting positive impacts on biodiversity.
Our vision is for every zoo and aquarium in Europe to actively contribute to the survival of endangered native species, playing a key role in habitat restoration, species reintroduction, and public education. Through partnerships, education, and action, we want to make European zoos and aquariums centers of innovation in conservation, inspiring others to join the fight for European wildlife.
The initiative focuses on increasing the number of zoos and aquariums actively participating in species conservation, strengthening collaboration among these institutions, conservation organizations, and governmental agencies. Our goal is to facilitate the exchange of best practices and success stories within the zoo and aquarium community, contributing to the recovery of endangered species populations across Europe.
