Project Title: Application of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) in Organic Waste Recycling and Optimization of High-Value Protein Production for Animal Feed
Partners: Faculty of Science (PMF)
Project Commencement Year: 2024
Status: Active
Species: Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens)

Project Overview:

This project explores the potential of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) in recycling organic waste and producing high-quality protein for animal feed. The larvae are cultivated on various waste types, including fruit and vegetable scraps and chicken feed, with careful control of variables such as temperature and humidity. Key performance indicators, including larval growth rate, feed conversion efficiency, and biomass yield, are analyzed to optimize rearing conditions.

Additionally, the project evaluates the nutritional value of the larvae and their application in the diets of zoo animals, assessing different processing methods such as drying and oil extraction. The use of BSFL offers dual benefits: reducing waste and providing a sustainable protein source for animal feed.

Project Objectives:
The primary goal of this project is to investigate the effectiveness of BSFL in recycling diverse types of organic waste while optimizing rearing conditions to maximize growth and high-value protein production. This effort supports sustainable bio-waste management and the use of larvae as a premium protein source for animal feed, reducing reliance on conventional protein sources.

The project highlights the importance of sustainable practices at the Zagreb Zoo, focusing on waste reduction and improving animal welfare. The findings and methodologies developed through this initiative can serve as an example and inspiration for other zoos and similar institutions, encouraging the adoption of sustainable solutions that promote ecological responsibility.

Summary:

The project explores the use of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) to recycle organic waste and produce high-quality protein for animal feed. This initiative not only helps reduce waste but also provides a sustainable protein source for animals, supporting resource management sustainability at the Zagreb Zoo.
