ZIMS – Zoological Information Management System |
Did you know that the Zagreb City Zoo plays a vital role in building the world’s largest and most comprehensive knowledge base on more than 22,000 species? As a member of the global nonprofit organization Species360, the zoo contributes daily by providing detailed information on the individual animals and groups in its care.
This data is recorded in the Species360 Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS)—a platform with a 50-year history and the largest global repository of species data. As of August 2024, the Zagreb City Zoo has submitted information on over 3,940 animals, covering 625 species, subspecies, and breeds.
By combining data from the Zagreb City Zoo with contributions from other conservation institutions, ZIMS supports critical insights into disease treatment, animal welfare, population health, and species conservation—ultimately advancing our understanding of animals and their environments
We are proud to be part of this international team and its ongoing efforts to improve animal welfare and conserve wild animal species. As part of our commitment to animal care and conservation, we meticulously document data about our animal collection to ensure the highest standards of care and to contribute meaningfully to population management and global conservation efforts. By continuing to share our knowledge and expertise, we can make even greater progress in protecting the planet’s biodiversity.
Zagreb City Zoo, like many other zoos, aquariums, and wildlife institutions around the world, uses the ZIMS (Zoological Information Management System) platform to monitor every individual animal and group. For instance, Species360’s Global Medical Resources—part of the ZIMS for Medical module—supports veterinarians by providing reference values for normal blood test results, aiding in both the prevention and treatment of diseases. Another component, ZIMS for Studbooks, is used by conservation teams globally to maintain the genetic diversity and health of captive populations. This is especially vital for reintroduction programs, where conservation organizations aim to restore native species to their natural habitats in a healthy and sustainable way.
