Project Name: European Species Initiative
Project Commencement Year: 2021
Status: Active
Type: Conservation of European Biodiversity
Europe is home to a rich diversity of species, many of which are under serious threat from habitat loss, climate change, and various human activities. Zoos and aquariums are uniquely positioned to play a vital role in conserving this biodiversity. As centers for environmental protection, education, and scientific research, they can engage the public in meaningful conservation efforts and raise awareness about the importance of protecting endangered species.
By preserving Europe’s natural heritage, zoos and aquariums contribute not only to the survival of wildlife but also to the health of ecosystems, local economies, and communities. Conserving European species is especially important, as many are deeply intertwined with our cultural identity and play essential roles in maintaining ecological balance.
To support these efforts, Zagreb Zoo has launched the European Species Initiative—a program dedicated to strengthening the conservation of native species across zoos and aquariums in Europe. This initiative fosters collaboration among European zoos, conservation organizations, and local communities, while also providing the resources and support needed to protect Europe’s unique fauna.
As part of the initiative, a platform for sharing ideas and best practices has been created. This collaborative approach empowers zoos and aquariums to become active players in wildlife conservation, leveraging their collective knowledge and resources to maximize impact.
This collaboration harnesses the collective knowledge and resources of our network, significantly enhancing the impact of our conservation efforts. The initiative serves as a dynamic hub for sharing innovative ideas, proven conservation strategies, and cutting-edge scientific research. By fostering dialogue and knowledge exchange, we promote continuous learning and adaptation—key drivers in safeguarding European species and their habitats.
At the core of the European Species Initiative is a powerful vision: to empower zoos and aquariums across Europe to take a leading role in the conservation of native species. These institutions are vital players in biodiversity protection and hold immense potential to contribute meaningfully through well-designed, targeted conservation projects.
Our mission is to equip zoos and aquariums with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to protect native European wildlife. By providing practical resources and encouraging collaboration, we aim to strengthen their capacity to develop and implement effective, long-lasting conservation programs.
We envision a future where every zoo and aquarium in Europe plays an active role in preserving endangered native species—engaging in habitat restoration, species reintroduction, and public education. Through partnerships, education, and action, we seek to transform these institutions into centers of conservation innovation, inspiring broader efforts to protect European biodiversity.
The initiative is committed to expanding the number of zoos and aquariums involved in species conservation, while reinforcing collaboration between these institutions, conservation organizations, and government agencies. Our goal is to facilitate the exchange of best practices and success stories within the community, accelerating the recovery of endangered species across Europe.
