Project Title: Philippine Crocodile Conservation Program (Mabuwaya Foundation)
Partners: Mabuwaya Foundation, local communities, Isabela Provincial Government, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
Project Commencement Year: 2003
Status: Active
Species: Philippine Crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis)
IUCN Red List Status: Critically Endangered (CR)
The Mabuwaya Foundation is dedicated to conserving the critically endangered Philippine crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis) and other endemic species through close collaboration with local communities in northern Luzon, Philippines. This rare freshwater crocodile is primarily found in the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountain range, within the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park—the largest protected area in the country.
The Foundation focuses its conservation efforts in the communities of San Mariano and Divilacan, with occasional activities in Dalupiri Island and the municipalities of Palanan, Maconacon, San Guillermo, and Benito Soliven. Employing a community-based conservation approach, the Foundation raises awareness about the ecological importance of the Philippine crocodile and promotes active local involvement in its protection.
Its conservation program consists of five core components: Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) campaigns; scientific research; habitat and species protection; capacity building; and the reinforcement and recovery of the crocodile population.
We proudly support the Mabuwaya Foundation through donations that fund vital conservation activities, including education initiatives and protective measures for the Philippine crocodile.
Griffon Vulture Conservation Project in the Lago di Cornino Nature Reserve
Project Title: Griffon Vulture Conservation Program in the Lago di Cornino Nature Reserve
Partners: Municipalities of Forgaria nel Friuli and Trasaghis, Parco Natura Viva, Hohe Tauern National Park, Zagreb Zoo, Ljubljana Zoo
Project Duration: 2013
Status: Completed
Species: Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus)
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC)
National Red List Status (Croatia): Critically Endangered (CR)
The Griffon Vulture Conservation Project at the Lago di Cornino Nature Reserve is dedicated to the preservation and monitoring of Griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) in the southeastern Alps. Supported by the municipalities of Forgaria nel Friuli and Trasaghis, in collaboration with Parco Natura Viva and Hohe Tauern National Park, the project serves a vital role as the only consistently inhabited vulture site in the entire Alpine region.By connecting vulture populations from Croatia and the Balkans, the initiative seeks to reduce mortality rates and create safe habitats with adequate food supplies—key steps toward establishing a permanent breeding colony at Lago di Cornino.
As part of its support, Zagreb Zoo contributed funds for a camera that provides continuous monitoring of raptor activity at the feeding station. This equipment has significantly enhanced the project’s ability to observe, record, and analyze the presence, behavior, and health of various bird species within the reserve.
