Philippine Crocodile Conservation Project (Crocodylus mindorensis, CR)
Project Title: Philippine Crocodile Conservation Program (Mabuwaya Foundation)
Partners: Mabuwaya Foundation, local communities, Isabela Provincial Government, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
Project Start Year: 2003
Status: Active
Species: Philippine Crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis)
IUCN Red List Status: Critically Endangered (CR)
The Mabuwaya Foundation is committed to conserving the Philippine crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis) and other endemic endangered species through collaboration with local communities in northern Luzon, Philippines. The Philippine crocodile, a critically endangered freshwater species, is primarily found in the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountain range within the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park, the largest protected area in the Philippines. The Mabuwaya Foundation actively operates in the communities of San Mariano and Divilacan to protect the remaining wild populations of the Philippine crocodile, and occasionally in areas such as Dalupiri Island and the municipalities of Palanan, Maconacon, San Guillermo, and Benito Soliven. The Foundation utilizes a community-based conservation approach to raise awareness of the importance of the Philippine crocodile and to encourage local participation in its protection. The conservation program includes five main components: Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) campaigns, research, protection, capacity building, and the reinforcement and recovery of the Philippine crocodile population.
We support the Mabuwaya Foundation through donations directed toward Philippine crocodile conservation activities, including educational campaigns and protective measures.
Griffon Vulture Conservation Project in the Lago di Cornino Nature Reserve
Project Title: Griffon Vulture Conservation Program in the Lago di Cornino Nature Reserve
Partners: Municipalities of Forgaria nel Friuli and Trasaghis, Parco Natura Viva, Hohe Tauern National Park, Zagreb Zoo, Ljubljana Zoo
Project Duration: 2013
Status: Completed
Species: Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus)
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC)
National Red List Status (Croatia): Critically Endangered (CR)
The Griffon Vulture Conservation Project in the Lago di Cornino Nature Reserve focuses on conserving and monitoring the population of Griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) in the southeastern Alps. Supported by the municipalities of Forgaria nel Friuli and Trasaghis, along with Parco Natura Viva and Hohe Tauern National Park, this project plays a critical role as the only regular habitat for vultures in the entire Alps. By linking vulture colonies from Croatia and the Balkans, the project aims to reduce mortality and establish safe areas with sufficient food, thereby increasing the chances for a permanent breeding colony in Lago di Cornino.
Zagreb Zoo supported the project by donating funds for a camera used to continuously monitor raptor activity at the feeding site. This donation has enabled ongoing observation and data collection on the presence, behavior, and health status of various bird species in the reserve.
